This "amazing" technology is called "Action Keys Mode", and the good news is that it is very easily turned off to get your laptop back to working the standard way of having to press the fn key. By default you do not need to press the (fn) key to get function key functionality.Įxample: If you press F5 (even in a browser window) it turns the backlit keyboard on and off, rather than refreshing the browser. Not sure what those pesky engineers at HP were thinking when they decided to change the default way the function (fn) keys work on the newer HP ENVY laptops. Well, except for one little thing that drove my crazy. If you’re certain you’ve been pressing the correct button and your BIOS isn’t booting, then your laptop keyboard likely has a hardware issue. If your laptop boots to Windows, then you’re either pressing the wrong button or indeed your keyboard isn’t working on a hardware level. This varies between different laptop brands, but it’s usually the Delete, F2, F8 or F12 key. Just clicking this switch while pressing the Fn button situated near the bottom row of your key-board will leave you with keyboard lighting functional magic. This switch may even be classified with a backlight icon.
To isolate the problem, as your laptop is booting up, repeatedly press the button that takes you to the BIOS screen. If your HP notebook computer has a backlit key-board, take a look on top bar of your keyboard and also situate the F5 button.
Is it a hardware issue (more serious) or a software one? The first thing you need to do is hone in on exactly what the problem with the keyboard is. Press the Enter key to display the Enabled / Disabled options. Press the up or down arrow key to select Action Keys Mode. Press the right or left arrow key to select the System Configuration menu. Remember: to reinstall a device, you just need to plug it in. Turn on the computer and immediately press the f10 key repeatedly to open the BIOS Setup Utility. In Device Manager again, click View, then “Show hidden devices.” Go down to keyboards, then right-click and uninstall everything called “HID Keyboard Device.” This is actually a bit of a catch-all term, as various other external devices – even mice – can be included here.
